The Baltimore Ravens didn't behave like a team selecting a typical second-round prospect when they drafted Zion Young. They behaved like a team that believed it had found a steal. Had Young heard his name called during the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, few would have questioned the selection. Instead, Baltimore watched him slide into Round 2 before making him the 45th overall choice.

That's where the conversation changes. The further a talented player falls, the greater the opportunity becomes for another team to capitalize. Instead, the Ravens may have seen something others missed. A First-Team All-SEC selection in 2025, Young arrived in Baltimore carrying the resume of someone expected to contribute quickly. So far, he appears to be doing exactly that.

Zion Young is rewarding the Ravens for their confidence

Some may remember it like it was yesterday, all of those social media clips of the draft phone calls and Young telling everyone, "I'm ready." He must have said it 20 times or so. It became a theme of the evening and offered an early glimpse into the confidence and mentality that made him such an attractive prospect in the first place.

No one should pretend that offseason practices tell the entire story. The pads aren't on yet. Training camp battles haven't begun. Nobody is game-planning for opponents. Still, first impressions matter. Recently, the Ravens' official website highlighted ten players who stood out during OTA sessions. Young was among those recognized, and the praise was encouraging.

"The pads haven't come on yet, but Young's physicality already jumps out. Whether it be pushing the pocket off the edge, bulldozing through gaps in the interior, or simply setting a hard edge, Young has made a strong first impression."

The real test is still ahead, but that's exactly what Baltimore hoped to see. The Ravens drafted Young because of his versatility, power, and disruptive potential. Early reports suggest those traits are already translating to the professional level.

Of course, the true evaluation begins when the intensity increases. Training camp will bring contact. Preseason games will bring live competition. The regular season will reveal how quickly Young can turn potential into production. It's still difficult to ask for a much better start.

The Ravens believed they were getting more than a typical second-round pick when they selected Zion Young. It's far too early to declare victory, but the early returns have been promising. If he continues developing at this pace, the conversation may soon shift from whether Baltimore got a steal to how so many teams allowed him to fall in the first place.
