Football locker rooms are built on more than schemes and talent. The best teams usually feature relationships that extend beyond the field, the kind built through long practices, difficult losses, shared expectations, and trust earned over time. The Philadelphia Eagles have leaned heavily into that type of culture during recent seasons, and linebacker Zack Baun recently offered another reminder.
NFL Films does the best it can with all of those mic'd up players and all of that behind-the-scenes access to paint a picture, but sometimes, to understand how strong the bonds are inside of a locker room, it's necessary to talk to the players themselves. Recently, while speaking with media members, Zack Baun pulled back a curtain to express how strong some of those bonds have become inside the building.
Several players were made available to the press after an OTA practice that was open to the media. Baun was one of those players. He took time to publicly thank a former teammate, Nakobe Dean. He didn't do so necessarily because he had to. He did so because he genuinely wanted to.
Baun spoke glowingly about Dean’s leadership, friendship, and the role he has played in helping him navigate his professional journey. That says a lot considering Baun’s own rise, but it's best one hears what he had to say in his own words.
The veteran linebacker has become one of Philadelphia’s most respected defenders, but even established players rely on teammates behind the scenes. Baun made it clear Dean has been one of those people for him, referring to the fellow linebacker as his “brother” while acknowledging the support and guidance he has received.
That kind of praise carries weight. Dean’s importance to the Eagles has never been limited strictly to production on Sundays. Coaches and teammates consistently pointed toward his intelligence, communication skills, and leadership qualities during his time with the organization.
Even while battling injuries throughout portions of his NFL career, Dean has remained an influential voice inside the locker room. He may have moved on to join the Las Vegas Raiders. Moments like this help explain why he'll be forever remembered for his time in Philadelphia.
The Eagles have spent years building a defense centered around toughness, accountability, and connection. Public comments like Baun’s offer a glimpse into the relationships fueling that culture internally, and honestly, that may be one of the more encouraging signs Philadelphia fans could ask for this time of year. Talent matters, but brotherhood usually matters too.
