Zach Ertz is working through one of the toughest stretches of his career. While the rest of the league gears up for the 2026 Scouting Combine and free agency madness, the veteran tight end is locked into an intense rehab grind after tearing his ACL late in the season.

The injury did not just knock him out for a few weeks. It ended his year and threw his entire future into question. The damage happened during a Week 14 game against the Minnesota Vikings on December 7, 2025.

Ertz went up for a pass in the third quarter and got hammered on his right leg by safety Jay Ward. The hit was clean but vicious, and it cost him the rest of the season.

Now, two months later, there’s finally some clarity on where things stand. NFL insider Tom Pelissero dropped an update that should ease some concerns.

“Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz plans to play a 14th NFL season and is expected to be cleared right around Week 1, per sources,” Pelissero shared. “Ertz is 2 months into rehab from a torn ACL.”

The timeline is encouraging, but whether he’ll be back in Washington is a different story. The Commanders recently parted ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who played a big role in bringing Ertz to the team.

If Ertz leaves, Washington loses more than production. He gave quarterback Jayden Daniels a steady outlet and someone who brought calm when things got chaotic.

In 13 games last season, Ertz hauled in 50 catches for 504 yards and four touchdowns. He was the safety valve Daniels leaned on when plays collapsed.

Ertz is betting on himself to be ready by Week 1, wherever that ends up being.
