Move the chains.

That’s what Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward will be tasked with doing proficiently in 2026. The Titans ranked No. 31 in the NFL in first down percentage in the passing game last season at 27.4 percent. Ward was sacked 55 times last season — more than any other quarterback in the NFL. Tennessee also lost the second-most sack yards in the league at 417 yards. The Titans’ problems on offense were exacerbated by Ward’s struggles to find open receivers when scrambling out of the pocket.

Flagrant overthrows. Far too many pressures. The Titans’ offense did not perform up to snuff last season.

Free agent tight end Zach Ertz is a match for what Tennessee needs on offense in 2026.

The Titans signing Wan’Dale Robinson gave the team a 1,000-yard wide receiver in the slot with the ability to catch the ball at a high rate. Robinson’s excellence in short yardage is an answer, on paper, for Ward to find quality looks on drives next season.

Ertz is a desirable tight end still available in free agency that has the skills to further that progression on paper. Tennessee has the option to consider Ertz, a former Super Bowl champion from 2018, to give Ward a steady option to look to on third down, as well as in the red zone.

The 35-year-old Ertz went for 504 yards in 13 games played for the Washington Commanders last season. He was on pace to record 659 yards over the course of the full 17-game season. Ertz recorded 10.1 yards per reception in 2025. He also registered a 69.4 percent catch rate on the year.

Ertz is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the Commanders’ 31-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 7. The Stanford product does plan to play in 2026, making him compatible with the Titans for what he hopes to be his age-36 season in the league.
