Grant Hill had a brilliant four-year career at Duke, with more great plays than anyone could easily catalog. For us, there were three that stood out.
#1: You won’t find it on YouTube, because it was a defensive play, but it was incredible: in his senior year, when UNC came to Cameron, Hill was back on defense and UNC had a 4-on-1 break. Hill was the 1 there, and he broke that up, which, realistically, should have been impossible. No one does that..but he did. And then he brought the ball up court like it was just the most normal thing in the world.
#2: His inbounds pass to Christian Laettner in the 1992 Elite Eight game against Kentucky. Laettner gets The Shot, but The Shot was only possible because of The Pass. Not many people could have threaded that needle that well.
#3: His iconic alley-oop in the 1991 NCAA championship game against Kansas.
Laettner grabbed the rebound and hit Bobby Hurley with a perfect outlet pass. Clair Bee would have been proud of that pass. John Wooden might have swooned.
But Hurley threw his pass just a little too high for most people. Hill, though, was not most people. He just went up and got it, cocked back, then brought it down into the rim. Everyone in the arena, notably CBS’s Billy Packer, assumed it was a lost cause. But Hill reached back, got it, and dunked it just as he was fading out of range.
For a lot of people, it would have seemed impossible. For Hill, it was just another play.
