As the Duke Blue Devils are set to face the St. John's Red Storm in the Sweet 16, St. John's head coach Rick Pitino has captured the attention of many. Thirty-four years ago, Pitino's Kentucky Wildcats were eliminated on a buzzer-beater in overtime by Christian Laettner, one of the most well-known shots in college basketball history.
That said, after all these years, Pitino doesn't have an issue with Laettner or the shot, but rather Grant Hill, who assisted him on the basket.
Prior to the game, Pitino spoke about both Laettner and Hill as well as the famous game.
"I take the '92 game, people misconstrue it, I took it as a positive," said Pitino. "I always treasured that game. I thought every time I've watched that game, I didn't grimace about Christian Laettner hitting the shot. I thought it was one of the greatest games played.
"I treasure that game in so many ways, not the loss, but the way the game was played. Give all the credit in the world (to Duke); I can't escape Grant Hill. (He) has done seven games for me this season (laughter)."
Pitino, of course, was joking, making light of the fact that he continues to see Hill on a regular basis due to his job as a college basketball announcer with CBS.
However, in order to overcome the Blue Devils Friday, Pitino will have to face Hill once more, as the Duke alum is set to call action of his former team once more.
