Duke has had plenty of great clutch plays, and great clutch players, over the years. JJ Redick, Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Bobby Hurley, Grayson Allen, Tyus Jones, Gene Banks, and most of all, Christian Laettner – you could go on for a while.
But one of the greatest clutch plays in Duke history came in 1986, when Notre Dame came to Cameron.
Coached by Digger Phelps and still independent, Notre Dame starred David Rivers, who played for Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s.
Duke was up, 75-74 with 0:06 left on the clock, and Notre Dame had the ball. Rivers got it and drove on Dawkins, who made a clean block as Rivers went up.
It was a phenomenal mano-a-mano play by Dawkins.
Surely Hurley was pulling for his former guard. Yet four years later, his son, Bobby, would start a legendary career for the Blue Devils, helping Duke win back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992, and setting a career assist record that stood for 33 years before being broken last spring by Purdue’s Braden Smith.
