Mar. 28—Non-seniors and elite scorers highlight the Class A boys basketball all-state first team selections, as selected by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.
The first team selections include Sioux Falls Christian junior guard Brant Wassenaar, Pine Ridge senior guard Marvin Richard III, Vermillion senior guard Trey Hansen, West Central junior guard Connor Mebius, Hamlin senior guard Jackson Wadsworth and Clark/Willow Lake sophomore forward Sully Felberg.
Wassenaar was selected as the coaches' Class A player of the year as the top vote-getter in the all-state voting, marking the fourth time in seven years the Class A award has gone to a junior. The 6-foot-4 Chargers' standout tallied 22.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, while hitting 64.6% of his field goals, nearly 39% of his 3-pointers and 85% of his free throws.
Richard, a 6-foot-3 guard, was the state's leading scorer on a per-game basis, averaging 30.3 points per contest, while adding 6.3 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game for the Thorpes. He also swiped 92 steals and hit 88% of his free throws. Richard broke the state single-game scoring record with 73 points on March 3 in the Region 7A playoffs, snapping a 73-year record previously held by Argonne's Delbert Gilliam in 1953. Richard finished sixth on the state's all-time scoring list with 2,689 career points. He has signed to play college basketball at the University of South Dakota.
Also representing the 2026 seniors in the Class A first team was the Tanagers' Hansen. The 6-foot-4 guard tallied 25.9 points, eight rebounds and 6.1 assists per game, plus scooping up 68 steals. Hansen was a 51% shooter from the field and hit 44% of his 3-pointers for Vermillion, where he became the school's all-time leading scorer this season.
The Class A state champions were represented by Mebius on the all-state team. The 5-foot-10 Trojan guard had 17.6 points per game and shot 60% from the field during the season, including 36% on 3-pointers. He also dished 5.6 assists per game for the state's only undefeated boys program.
Wadsworth, a 6-foot-3 guard, posted 21.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game for Hamlin. He was a 57.6% shooter overall, 44.3% on 3-pointers and hit 85.5% of his free throws, leading Hamlin (22-4) to its fourth-straight season of at least 21 wins.
Felberg represents the Cyclones as the tallest member on the first team, as the 6-foot-8 forward had 15.6 points and 7 rebounds per game, while hitting 51% of his field goals and 78% of his free throws. He had 30 blocked shots to lead all team selections.

Class A third-team selections included Hill City senior guard Zane Messick, Sioux Falls Christian senior forward Cooper Goodbary, Lennox senior guard Tate Gerdes and junior guard Aiden Hanssen, Stanley County junior guard/forward Eddie Duffy and Clark/Willow Lake junior guard Chris Bevers
The Class A honorable mention list includes Flandreau senior forward Luke Sheppard, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte senior guards Damien Cloud and Levi Elk Nation, Miller senior forward Isaak Hunter, Stanley County senior guard Paxton Deal, Winner junior forward Carter Craven and Sioux Valley junior guard Brady Hiltunen.
