Mar. 28—MITCHELL — Powered by players that helped their teams reach the state tournament, the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Class B boys basketball all-state first team features a deep pool of talented players.
The Class B boys all-state first team includes De Smet senior center Grant Wilkinson, who was selected as the coaches' player of the year in Class B. Sully Buttes' Wesley Wittler and Viborg-Hurley's Brady Schroedermeier were selected as seniors, while Castlewood junior Kamden Keszler, Wall junior Teelan Kjerstad and Freeman sophomore David Walter were on the first team.
Walter, a 6-foot-5 sophomore guard, helped power Freeman to the Class B state championship for the first time since 1975. He had 17.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 64.7% from the field and 42.9% on 3-pointers and hitting 75% of his free throws. He is the first Freeman first-team all-state selection since Eli Hofer in 1998.
Wilkinson, a 6-foot-10 center, had an imposing season with 24.4 points and 18.8 rebounds per game, plus 45 blocks. He shot 56% from the field in powering the Bulldogs to the Class B state tournament. Wilkinson is committed to play college football at South Dakota State. Wilkinson's season makes it four Class B player of the year awards for De Smet in the last seven seasons, after Kalen Garry won the award three times between 2020 and 2022.
Wittler and Schroedermeier also made the first team as seniors. Wittler, a 6-foot-1 guard, had 22.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, plus 81 steals for the Chargers. Schroedermeier finished with 22.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and shot 60% as a 6-foot-2 forward, plus 70 steals for Viborg-Hurley. Both players are planning on playing college football, with Schroedermeier committed to SDSU and Wittler pledged to Northwestern College in Iowa.
Keszler, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, had 19.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for the state runner-up Warriors. Kjerstad, another 6-foot-3 junior guard, led the entire all-state group with 27.9 points per game, plus 5.3 rebounds and four assists on average and 91 total steals for Class B third-place Wall.
Of the repeat selections, Wilkinson and Wittler were both on the first team in 2025, while Schroedermeier was on the second team and Kjerstad and Walter were third-team nods.
Selections for the Class B all-state second team include Wessington Springs senior Colby Flowers, Deubrook Area senior Chance Schoenfeld, Bridgewater-Emery senior Ben Weber, Parkston junior Brycen Bruening, Lyman junior MJ Diehm and Aberdeen Christian junior Brooks Jett.
Flowers, a 6-foot-5 forward, averaged 19 points and nine rebounds for the Spartans, while the 6-foot-6 Weber averaged a double-double for the season at 18.5 points and 10.7 rebounds along with six assists per game and shot 58% from the field. The 6-foot-2 guard Bruening scored 19.7 points and grabbed six rebounds per game, plus made 61 steals. Diehm, a 5-foot-11 guard, powered the Raiders to a fourth-place finish in Class B with 19 points and six assists per game, shooting 48% from the field and 38% on 3-pointers.
Members of the Class B all-state third team include Wessington Springs senior Parker Graff, Freeman senior Tate Sorensen, Wall senior Emmet Dinger, Bridgewater-Emery senior Holden Wollmann, Viborg-Hurley senior Jake Austin and Iroquois/Lake Preston junior Lucas Peskey.
Sorensen, a 6-foot-2 forward, had 10.3 points per game and shot 49.7% from the field for the state champion Flyers. Graff, a 6-foot-1 guard, averaged 16 points per game for Wessington Springs, and Wollmann, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 21.8 points and six rebounds per game.
The Class B honorable mention list includes Gregory senior Colt Keiser, Leola/Frederick Area senior Westyn Thorpe, Langford Area senior Kassen Keough, Wolsey-Wessington senior Caleb Richmond, De Smet junior Noah Luethmers, Lyman junior Dawsen Volmer and Waubay/Summit sophomore Hogan Hlavacek.
Keiser, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged a double-double for the season at 18.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, plus blocked 47 shots for Gregory, and Volmer, a 6-foot-4 forward/guard, had 13 points and seven rebounds per game, while blocking 40 shots for Lyman.
