If the New York Yankees really want to get creative at the Major League Baseball trade deadline, they should absolutely be in the mix for a shortstop. I know that some fans want Jose Caballero to play short, but I'd actually move him over to third base, get Anthony Volpe off the roster, and have Jazz Chisholm man second base for the remainder of the year.

Whatever the Yankees want to do with Chisholm in the offseason is up to them, as he's set to hit the free-agent market. Nonetheless, I wouldn't move on from him at the deadline if the Yankees are really that serious about winning the World Series, and all indications suggest that they are.

In what would be a crazy move, the Yankees should look to at least see what the market would be like and determine whether the Houston Astros would be willing to move on from him in a deal with the Yankees.

That player is none other than Jeremy Pena, who will be a free agent in the winter of 2028. With how poorly the Astros have played to begin this season, currently 28-36 and 5.5 games out in the American League West, there seems to be a sense that Houston could at least decide to move on from certain guys.

“I'm not saying it will happen or even that it's likely to happen; I'm just saying I can see how it would happen. The Astros are a fringe contender, Jeremy Peña will be a free agent after next season and he's a Scott Boras client. The chances for an extension are small and Houston has let several franchise stars leave as free agents (Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, George Springer, etc.). Is it really so hard to imagine the same happening with Peña after next year? I don't think so,” Mike Axisa of CBS Sports wrote.

The one thing here the Yankees will have to hope for is that not only can they land Pena from the Astros and that Houston would be willing to trade him to New York, but that Houston thinks it doesn't have much of a chance to make the postseason.

Only five games out right now, the Astros have proven over the past decade or so that they can't be counted out at any moment. Five games are absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, so it's very possible that Pena stays.
