ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – At the six-week mark since landing on the injured list, Yankees slugger Aaron Judge will have his fractured first right rib re-imaged.
Brian Cashman said the new MRIs would occur during next week’s All-Star break.
Based on the original diagnosis, “the timeframe that it would take to heal should allow him to be back with us this season,’’ said the Yanks GM. But they’ll “wait for the imaging to see where we’re at in that process.’’
On the IL since June 2, Judge had played in some discomfort in the weeks leading up to initial tests that revealed his condition.
As for the new imaging, “I don’t think we’re anticipating it coming back clean,’’ said Cashman. “I think we’re anticipating and hopeful that it’s showing the healing process.’’
Perhaps a best-case scenario puts Judge back in the Yanks’ lineup before the end of August, but the Yankees are mindful of anything that would potentially setback the captain’s recovery timeline.
“He should be asymptomatic before we turn him loose,’’ said Cashman. “If he’s asymptomatic and not feeling anything and showing healing,’’ that’s when they’ll proceed to the next step.
“You don’t want anything interfering with the healing process,’’ said Cashman, adding that Judge is currently restricted from any exercises that put stress on his ribcage.
“We’ll be able to get a better idea of some things and maybe more answers to provide…from our medical team once we get the image evaluation.’’
Judge has accompanied the Yankees on this road trip leading up to the break, with the team in a spiral – with 15 losses in their last 20 games entering Thursday.
“Clearly you miss him, that’s certainly part of it,’’ Cashman said at Tropicana Field, speaking before Thursday afternoon’s series finale against the AL East-leading Rays.
However, the two-time defending AL MVP’s absence is “not an answer to why we’re struggling’’ collectively as a lineup, Cashman said.
Judge’s injury timeline hasn’t necessarily impacted the Yanks’ strategy leading up to the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.
“We’re open…to try to improve ourselves, period,’’ said Cashman, whether it’s pitching or offense.
Meanwhile, slugging DH Giancarlo Stanton (right calf strain) hasn’t played since April 24, and has “just started running a little bit,’’ Cashman said.
Stanton is dealing with “a whole new injury, not a setback to a prior injury,’’ Cashman said of the second strain, suffered during his rehab last month.
Cashman said that Stanton has received platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections to further his recovery and called his situation another “unfortunate’’ circumstance.
“We’d love to have him in our lineup and be the weapon that he is,’’ said Cashman.
