BOSTON — The Yankees should have their center fielder back soon.
Aaron Boone said Saturday that Trent Grisham, on the injured list with a right hamstring strain since June 13, is expected back at some point during the Bombers’ upcoming homestand. The Yankees return home Monday for a three-game series against Detroit, followed by an off day and a three-game set against the Twins.
Grisham, who has been doing baseball activities at Fenway Park the last few days with the Yankees in Boston, is going to play in at least one rehab game, Boone said, though it could be more than that.
Grisham had been one of the Yankees’ hottest hitters before hurting his hammy running the bases in Toronto on June 12. Prior to that, he had hit .306 with three homers, 15 RBI and an .853 OPS over his last 30 games.
The veteran, who didn’t get many positive results before that, is hitting .232 with eight homers, 35 RBI and a .747 OPS overall this season.
With Grisham out, the Yankees have had to rotate different names in center and the rest of their outfield. While Cody Bellinger and Spencer Jones — the latter botched a line drive in Friday’s loss — have gotten the majority of the starts up the middle, Boone had the righty-swinging Max Schuemann in center with the Yankees facing the left-handed Jake Bennett on Sunday.
“He settles things a lot, because you know he’s there [in center],” Boone said of Grisham’s value. “We certainly miss him. I also feel like we’re capable, and it is a good thing to see other guys, find out about [them], and carve out roles.”
Ryan McMahon (peritonsillar abscess) should also be back with the Yankees soon.
Boone said the third baseman went back to New York on Friday to begin baseball activities. He’s been feeling better after some recommended rest and is expected to spend the minimum 10 days on the injured list.
