BRIDGEWATER – One of the key starting pitchers who helped push the Yankees deep into last postseason may have taken his final step back to the big leagues.
Clarke Schmidt tossed 61 pitches (45 strikes) over four scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out four Thursday night in his second rehab outing for Double-A Somerset. Schmidt’s fastball touched 94 mph in brisk conditions against Reading, the Phillies’ affiliate.
“Felt good,” said Schmidt, who said he anticipates a return to pinstripes this “upcoming week.”
“It was good to get out there ... very cold, but it was good to get out and get in a competitive atmosphere," he said. "Just getting out there and competing again was a lot of fun. Had a lot of fun with the guys. Was able to get multiple ups, so was happy with that."
The 29-year-old righthander has been sidelined with right shoulder tendinitis that cut his Spring Training short. He held Hartford scoreless in 52 pitches (37 strikes) over 3 1/3 innings Saturday when he struck out seven.

“Feeling really, really good towards the end of last season and even in the offseason feeling good, it was very frustrating to have something pop up out of nowhere,” he said. “I want to be one of those guys they can rely on for 32 starts every year, but I want to make it up to them in the long run and be competitive in the starts I do have left and help this team win games.”
Schmidt’s expected to rejoin the Yankees’ rotation April 15 or April 16, replacing either Carlos Carrasco or Somerset alum Will Warren.

Schmidt went 5-5 with a 2.85 ERA in 16 regular season starts in 2024, striking out 93 in 85 ⅓ innings. He made two rehab outings with Somerset last season before rejoining the big club in September.
