The New York Yankees continue to search for bullpen reinforcements ahead of the MLB trade deadline, but one of their early attempts to land an impact reliever has reportedly fallen short.
According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the San Diego Padres rejected a trade proposal that would have sent right-hander Will Warren to San Diego in exchange for reliever Adrian Morejon. The failed talks highlight both the Yankees’ urgency to strengthen their bullpen and the Padres’ high asking price for one of the most effective relievers potentially available.

It’s easy to understand why San Diego isn’t eager to part with Morejon. Since the 2024 season, he has developed into one of baseball’s most dependable late-inning arms. Over 196 innings as a reliever, he owns an outstanding 2.62 ERA, the third-most innings pitched among relievers during that span.
He’s continued that success this season, and is averaging 99.5 mph on his sinker and 99.3 mph on his four-seam fastball. He has shown exceptional command, too, with a very impressive 6.2% walk rate.
With numbers like those, it’s no surprise the Padres are placing a premium on his value.

Although the Padres reportedly turned down the offer, Warren remains an intriguing young starter.
This season, he’s recorded a 4.14 ERA over 108 2/3 innings.
Warren got off to an excellent start this year, carrying a 3.22 ERA into the beginning of June before hitting a rough stretch in which he struggled to pitch deep into games and limit runs.
On paper, the framework of the deal made sense. The Padres are known to be searching for starting pitching, while the Yankees have made no secret of their desire to add another high-leverage reliever before the deadline.
Still, Nightengale’s report suggests San Diego didn’t believe Warren alone was enough to justify moving Morejon.
With time running out before the deadline, New York may have to sweeten its offers if it hopes to land one of the top bullpen arms on the market. Whether that means including additional prospects or pursuing a different reliever altogether remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: acquiring Adrian Morejon won’t come cheap.
