Cam Schlittler delivered as good of a start as the New York Yankees could have hoped for on Sunday in their series-ending contest against the Atlanta Braves. With the Yankees being on track for a sweep, Schlittler put up a seven-inning gem, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out 11 (and walking none). However, New York couldn’t muster the requisite run support as they lost in extra innings, 2-1.
In the eighth inning, Trent Grisham put the Yankees on the board with a solo shot, fueling hopes of a victory. However, after the Braves scored in the 10th, New York’s offensive struggles reared their ugly head and they couldn’t retaliate.
Nonetheless, Schlittler did everything he could to put the Yankees in a position to win. The runs simply did not come on a night where they needed them the most.

“Regardless of the score, you always want to try to put yourself in the position to be perfect and set your team up for a win. It’s a close game against a really good team, so if you’re not going to be locked in for that, then I don’t know what will get you there,” Schlittler said, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Schlittler was back to form immediately for the Yankees; he allowed four runs in his previous start in a 13-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, but he isn’t one of the favorites to win the AL Cy Young award for nothing.
On the year, Schlittler has an ERA of 2.21 in 25 starts (146.2 innings), and he’s been the Yankees’ most reliable, excellent, and consistent starter in 2026.
It’s now a matter of scoring enough runs for the Yankees as they await the return of their big guns. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton are all on the injured list at the moment, so it’ll be up to the likes of Ben Rice, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Garcia Jr., and the rest of New York’s bats to keep them afloat.
