After an absence of over a year, Kevin Owensfinally returned at WWE SummerSlam 2026. In the opening match of the Night Two event, Owens made his surprising comeback and earned himself an Undisputed WWE Title shot against CM Punk.
Just days after returning from his 17-month absence, Owens shared a photo on X, documenting and sharing his injury recovery journey with his fans. The former Universal Champion shared a series of photos and scans from different periods of his injury and recovery. The first image of the scan was taken in Jun. 2025, while the last one was taken in Dec. 2025. The scans included pictures of his neck both in extension and flexion.
AEW wrestler Will Ospreay, who also made his comeback earlier this year from neck surgery, also reacted to the scans and wrote, “Welcome to the club friend.” Owens is currently scheduled to face Punk for a shot at his Undisputed WWE title, although a date for the match has not been announced yet. Similarly, Will Ospreay is also set to challenge Kenny Omega on Aug, 30, 2026, in London for the AEW World title.

WWE star Kevin Owens addresses his neck injury and comeback
At the WWE SummerSlam post-show, Kevin Owens opened up about his neck surgery and recalled his time away and comeback. “There was a moment I thought it wasn’t gonna happen, and I definitely did not make peace with it. I was not ready. Getting this taken away from you when you’re not ready is hard. But I had such a great group of people around me to support me through it: my wife, my kids, my friends, the WWE medical staff, even you (Big E),” Owens said.
“I would talk to you a lot, but I was never okay with it. Up to a month ago, I was like, ‘This may be it’. We kept doing scans; it kept not showing what we were hoping for as far as the healing process from the surgery. Then I was like, ‘Well maybe it’s not gonna happen.’ Then a couple of weeks ago, they said, ‘We finally saw what we needed to see; you can get back in the ring.’ From there, here I am.”
