Game Preview
West Virginia returns to Hope Coliseum this evening, looking to reset after a tough road trip through Arizona as they host a Kansas State team that comes to Morgantown shorthanded.
The Mountaineers are 13-7 overall and 4-3 in Big 12 play, tied for seventh entering the week. Kansas State arrives at 10-10 and 1-6 in conference action, but their record doesn’t reflect all the details. Jerome Tang’s group has been dealing with injuries that have limited the rotation and changed how they have to play.
Kansas State scored a season-low 62 points in Saturday’s loss to Kansas, but that game also highlighted the fact that when PJ Haggerty is on the floor, the offense always has a chance. Haggerty is averaging 23.4 points per game, placing him fifth nationally, and is exceptionally good at using defenders’ hands and body position against them.
The question for West Virginia is less about stopping Haggerty outright and more about controlling everything around him. Kansas State has shooters who can step in score when needed. David Castillo and Nate Johnson both played nearly 40 minutes each against Kansas, and Andrej Kostic came off the bench to hit four threes. When the Wildcats space the floor and let Haggerty dictate, possessions can get uncomfortable quickly.
Injuries have thinned Kansas State’s frontcourt. Khamari McGriff and Elias Rapieque, both 6-foot-9, have missed time, while wing Abdi Bashir Jr. is out after undoing going surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot last week. That has forced Tang to shorten the bench and lean on a smaller group, which can simplify things for a team that already wants the ball in one guy’s hands — something Hodge noted can sometimes make teams more dangerous.
West Virginia counters with one of the best home records in the country. The Mountaineers are undefeated in 12 games at Hope Coliseum, outscoring opponents by more than 21 points per game. They’ve held teams to 36.7% shooting at home and own a +7.2 rebounding margin on their own floor.
Offensively, WVU continues to spread production. Honor Huff leads the team at 16.3 points per game and remains the focal point for opposing defenses, while Treysen Eaglestaff, Brennen Lorient, and Chance Moore have all turned in double figure outings. Moore’s bench scoring has given Hodge flexibility with lineups, especially when matchups dictate playing smaller.

Series History
West Virginia and Kansas State will meet for the 30th time on Tuesday night in a series that dates back to 1949. WVU holds a narrow 16–13 edge all-time, including a 15–12 mark since joining the Big 12 ahead of the 2012–13 season. The Wildcats won the first meeting between the two programs, a 49–44 decision in Morgantown on Dec. 12, 1949. While WVU has won six of the last 11 matchups overall, Kansas State has taken the last three meetings, including last season’s game in Manhattan.
Prediction
Kansas State will score enough to stay in it, mostly because PJ Haggerty is too good not to. But WVU’s defensive consistency at home and ability to get production from multiple scorers gives them the advantage. If they can keep Haggerty off the free throw line, avoid turnovers and can keep themselves out of foul trouble, the Mountaineers should be able to keep their home streak alive.
