JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Brandon Worley capped off a dominant summer on the local amateur golf circuit Sunday, winning the Tillinghast Invitational at Johnson City Country Club to complete a sweep of the region’s four premier amateur tournaments.
The defending champion entered the final round with a three-shot lead and never relinquished control, carding a 2-under 68 to finish at 6-under-par 134, five strokes ahead of runner-up Lucas Armstrong.
Worley said playing his home course added extra pressure, but he relied on patience and course knowledge to finish the job.
“I’m very excited,” Worley said. “With this being my home course, I put a lot of pressure on myself to finish it off. I knew where to miss, where the pins were. I just stayed steady, and here I am.”
Armstrong fired an even-par 70 to claim solo second at 139, while Tusculum’s Gavin Sells finished third at 141 after shooting a 72. Bryan Sangid posted the low round of the day with a 3-under 67 to move into a tie for fourth.
The victory completes a remarkable run for Worley, who also claimed titles this summer at the East Tennessee Amateur, Lonesome Pine Invitational and Ridgefields Invitational.
“I think mentally it’s a lot tougher than physically because they are four weeks in a row and being in the final group on Sunday is tough enough,” Worley said. “You just have to keep it one hole at a time and just move forward, and luckily I came out on top on all of them.”
