Every four years, the World Cup captivates audiences around the globe and provides a showcase of the world's best soccer players on the biggest stage. What comes from that, for players, is more viewership, more Instagram followers, and money.

FIFA has continuously increased the prize money available for teams to take their chunk out of, depending on when they are eliminated in the tournament.

This year, a team that was eliminated at the group stage of the World Cup earned more than Brazil did for winning the 2002 tournament.

Here's the rundown on how much each team earned during their 2026 World Cup campaign.

Total prize money at the 2026 World Cup

FIFA has allocated $655 million in prize money for the 2026 World Cup in North America, according to the organization.

That present-day sum is a staggering increase of $215 million from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the previous edition charting as a $40 million increase from 2018. In 2014, $358 million was divided at Brazil's World Cup.

The trend has been a consistently higher prize pool with each edition of the World Cup. That has continued in 2026, and will likely carry on in the future.

How much prize money will the 2026 World Cup winners get?

FIFA confirmed in December 2025 that the 2026 World Cup champions were to receive a record $50 million in prize money.

That is an increase of $8 million compared to 2022 and continues a trend that has seen the winners' pay packets increase massively over the past 40 years.

Prior to 2006, World Cup-winning teams never pocketed more than $10 million, with 1982 champions Italy traveling home with a mere $2.2 million for their trophy-hoisting efforts.

In 2002, there was a big push from national teams for FIFA to increase the prize money on offer, with growing World Cup revenue ensuring such profits have been handed down to successful sides since.

How much money do players make at the World Cup?

Players make a portion of the team's sum of money depending on the stage at which they are eliminated from the World Cup. Base salaries can differ between national teams and the quality of player, but all players receive a portion of money regardless.

FIFA allows each team to decide what share players receive, and Germany promised to give each of their players a near $400,000 bonus had they lifted the title on home soil in 2006.

In 2022, it was reported that Australia paid each of its players AU$226,000, with an extra $290,000 earned for reaching the knockout stages.

After the 2026 World Cup, Team USA made headlines for splitting up their tournament earnings evenly between their men's and women's national teams, according to ESPN.

How does World Cup 2026 prize money compare to the 2027 Women's World Cup?

While the figure is already known for the 2026 World Cup, the Women's World Cup in 2027 does not have a publicly known figure for prize money just yet.

According to their numbers for the 2023 Women's World Cup, FIFA put $110 million on the table to be divided between teams and players that year.

While it is almost six times less than what was offered at the men's 2026 World Cup, it is a sizeable amount more than the estimated $30 million at the 2019 Women's World Cup. Expect a continuously increasing number as well for the female players.
