One point away from advancing to the medal round for the first time, the United States’ women’s curling team was unable to close out Great Britain in an 8-7 loss in Cortina D’Ampezza on Wednesday.
Great Britain had to win to stay alive for the medal round, won on an amazing throw by skip Rebecca Morrison, who banked her stone off a wide blocking stone and spun it right. On a perfect diagonal, the Great Britain stone ejected a U.S. stone out of the button and took its place.
With the last U.S. throw, skip Tabitha Peterson — aiming to scatter Great Britain’s two scoring stones — hit a blocking stone instead and sent it wide.
“They made a great shot,” Peterson told NBC. “I’d say maybe you make that less than 50 percent of the time. It’s a tough shot. So yeah, I mean, kudos to them.”
It was a tough loss for Team Peterson, which is aiming to get the U.S. into the medal round for the first time in women’s Olympic play. Now 5-3, they still have a chance, but will meet second-place Switzerland — 5-2 heading into Wednesday’s match against Italy — on Thursday at 7:05 a.m.
Peterson stole a point with a perfect throw into the button to tie the match, 2-2, in the fourth, and the U.S. took a 3-2 lead when Great Britain skip Rebecca Morrison’s final throw failed to knock the red stone out of scoring position in the fifth.
Great Britain took two in the sixth, but with the hammer in the seventh, the U.S. finished a three-point end for a 6-4 lead. In the eighth, the Americans stole one point for a 7-4 lead.
Team Peterson, which also features Tara Peterson, Cory Thiesse and Taylor Anderson-Heide, can clinch a spot in the semifinals with a win against Switzerland on Thursday morning. Otherwise, they’ll need help from other teams, and could wind up in a tiebreaker situation.
