CHICAGO — WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that the league is launching an official replay center ahead of the 2027 season during a press conference before the All-Star Game in Chicago.Officiating has been a contentious issue this season. The league implemented an officiating task force earlier this year to address increased foul calls and enforcement of game rules.
The replay center is intended to accelerate the replay review process. Special cameras will be installed in every WNBA arena (those that share an arena with an NBA team already have them), and referees in the building can consult with the replay center based on certain triggers. The operators in the center can look at video replay with more camera angles than the game officials have access to.
Ideally, the accuracy of officiating also improves with this addition.
“As the WNBA continues its extraordinary growth, we’re committed to investing in every aspect of the game, including the technology and resources that support players, teams, and officials,” said head of WNBA league operations Bethany Donaphin in a statement. “Leveraging the NBA’s state-of-the-art replay center is an important step in the continued evolution of our game. It allows us to enhance the consistency and efficiency of replay reviews while embracing innovations that strengthen the competition and deliver the best possible experience for all our stakeholders.”
The NBA has had a replay center since the 2014-15 season. The NBA also has a “last two-minute” report that evaluates the correctness of every call in the final two minutes of a close game; it is available publicly on the NBA website. At the moment, the WNBA will not be adding a similar feature.
“We’re obviously going to look at it, I’ve talked to the players about it,” Engelbert said. “It’s another huge capital allocation to have an L2M report. It’s on the list, but nothing to report on it.”
