For less than an hour Monday night, Flau'jae Johnson was a member of the Golden State Valkyries as the No. 8 pick in the WNBA Draft.
But she’ll wear a different jersey than the one she posed with on Monday’s draft stage. The Seattle Storm selected Marta Suárez with the No. 16 pick, then immediately traded Suárez to Golden State for the rights to Johnson. The Valkyries will also receive a second-round pick in the 2028 draft in the deal.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert announced the trade to a stunned draft room shortly after Suárez was selected.
Johnson starred at LSU for four seasons playing for head coach Kim Mulkey. She won an NCAA championship as a freshman starter on LSU’s 2022-23 team. She was a two-time All-American as a junior and senior.
Now she’ll join a Storm team that’s seeking to rebuild after losing the top five scorers from last season’s playoff team in free agency. Gone from Seattle are Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, Brittney Sykes, Gabby Williams andErica Wheeler, each of whom averaged 10-plus points for the Storm last season.
Johnson becomes an immediate centerpiece for a Storm team with an overhauled roster for 2026. She’ll join the Storm alongside Awa Fam Thiam, whom Seattle selected with the No. 3 pick Monday night.
