WELLINGTON — The winter polo season, expected to be one of the largest and most successful in the sport's history, opens Dec. 28 with the USPA Butler Handicap at National Polo Center.
The first of five Sunday featured matches will be hosted by Port Mayaca Polo Club on U.S. Polo Assn Field One at 3 p.m.
The opening final pits La Fe/Eastern Hay (Louis Devaleix, Baldo Palomeque, Lucas Diaz Alberdi, Geronimo Obregon) against Dutta Corp (Timmy Dutta, Vaughn Miller Jr., Stevie Orthwein, Gringo Colombres).
The National Polo Center, the premier destination for polo in the U.S., is one of the world's most prestigious venues owned and operated by the United States Polo Association, the sport's governing body. The USPA has more than 200 member clubs, 5,000 registered players and 50 national tournaments.

Every Sunday afternoon through April 26 feature games and tournament finals will be held on U.S. Polo Assn Field One.
The Gauntlet of Polo (18-22 goals), the sport's Triple Crown, begins February 11-March 1 with the C.V. Whitney Cup, continuing with the USPA Gold Cup from March 4-29, and concluding with the U.S. Open Polo Championship, April 1-26.
Most of the world's top players are expected to compete in the Gauntlet, including father and son, Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso, and brothers Barto and Jeta Castagnola, fresh off Argentina's historic Triple Crown win for La Natividad/La Dolfina. The foursome, each rated 10 goals, won the Hurlingham Open, Tortugas Open and Argentine Open, finishing 12-0.
Other top Gauntlet players are 10-goalers Hilario Ulloa and Tomas Panelo and 9-goalers Polito Pieres, Diego Cavanagh and Fran Elizalde. At least 11 teams are expected to compete.
Prize money distribution will follow last year’s format, with $25,000 to the C.V. Whitney Cup winner, $75,000 to USPA Gold Cup and $100,000 presented to the winner of the U.S. Open Polo Championship.
Women's polo takes center stage with the Jan. 25-Feb. 15 U.S. Open Women's Championship featuring 10-goalers Hope Arellano, Mia Cambiaso, Milly Hine, Hazel Jackson and Cande Fernandez-Araujo. Preliminary matches will be held at Port Mayaca Polo Club with the semifinals and finals at NPC.
Also included on the schedule is the fifth edition of the NPC 16-Goal Championship. Qualifiers will be played at several clubs, with the championship hosted by NPC. Participating clubs are Port Mayaca Polo Club as well as the Wellington Polo Tour (WPT) with Wellington-based Patagones Polo Club and group of private fields hosting WPT games.
The NPC 16-Goal Championship consists of four qualifying tournaments including the Jan. 6-25 Joe Barry Memorial, Jan. 23-Feb. 22 Ylvisaker Cup, Feb. 16-March 14 Iglehart Cup and March 16-April 4 Outback Cup. Each winning team advances to the April 9-12 championship.
The USPA is launching a new digital streaming platform, a dedicated channel for association members and polo fans around the world to access USPA Polo Network livestream coverage, archived games and exclusive video content. Coverage begins with a free preview of the USPA Butler Handicap. The paid subscription model will officially launch on Jan. 1 at watch.uspolo.org.
