Mar. 24—AIKEN — This year marks the 50th anniversary of Women's Intercollegiate Polo.
Parker Scott, USC Aiken Women's Polo coach, said that it makes the team's USPA Division I National Intercollegiate Championship Tournament win all the more special.
The team, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation out of around 35 universities in the U.S., secured the championship win after defeating Texas A&M University 15-6 on March 22.
This victory is the first time in USCA history that the women's polo team has finished a season undefeated.
"The team played excellent polo this week, first against Cornell and today against Texas A&M," he said after the win.
Scott said that the three players have a high level of skill and understanding of the game and complement each other's style of playing. "Today's Championship Match against A&M was a masterclass of supportive teamwork and talented, disciplined, clean and open polo."
"All three ladies played lights out, exhibiting their talents for the polo world to see," he added. "It was a dominating performance. I am extremely proud of them."
Since 2022, USCA Polo has been playing in the top, D1 level of all collegiate teams.
While a polo club can have any number of members, the actual team is composed of three players. These are club president Brianna Jordan, her twin sister and team captain Madison Jordan and vice president Winnie Branscum.
All three have played in the U.S. Polo Association's National Youth Tournament Series. The Jordan twins have both won high school level national championships, and Branscum comes from a polo playing family.
During the tournament, Branscum and Madison Jordan were noted as tournament All-Stars, and Branscum was also awarded Best Playing Pony. Her horses were also part of the horses elected as Best Playing String.
Scott spoke about USCA and the community's support for the team.
"It takes a small village to succeed in such a demanding sport, so in speaking for team, we are very thankful for the enthusiastic support of USCA, our financial backers, those who have played in our practice games and to to the beautiful New Bridge Polo Club for the use of their arena," he said.
This win brings additional excitement to the upcoming Pacers and Polo event, which serves as the finale of the Aiken Triple Crown. Pacers and Polo will be held on Saturday, March 28.
