Willson Contreras Discusses Benches Clearing Incident originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins had a benches-clearing incident on Saturday after Willson Contreras ran into catcher Victor Caratini at home plate.
In the bottom of the fourth innings, Ceddane Rafaela hit a double, and Contreras tried to score from first, but the throw beat him. As Contreras continued to run home, he ran through Carting, who took exception to the play and confronted the Red Sox slugger.
After Cartini went at Contreras, the benches cleared, and following Boston’s 4-2 loss, Contreras opened up on the incident and what happened.
“No, it wasn't anything malicious or anything at all, it was not bad intention,” Contreras said postgame on Saturday. “I played with Caratini with [the Cubs for a] long time, so there weren't any bad intentions behind that. When I was getting to home plate, when I thought it was going to be out, I tried to stop myself, but at the end of the day, if I dive, I might have hit him harder.”
Although the contact from Contreras wasn’t much, Cartini wasn’t happy and he told the Red Sox’s first baseman that he should have slid.
“He told me that I should have slid or something like that,” Contreras said. “From my perspective, if I slid or tried to do something different, I might hit him harder than what actually happened. But at the end of the day, that's a tough play. I need to keep trying to touch home plate, because that's what I need to do, and yeah, the play happens.”
Contreras admitted he was surprised the benches cleared, as he is friendly with Cartini.
Boston will look to avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Twins on Sunday afternoon.
