STARKVILLE – It was hot enough as it was on Monday, but Avery Williamson turned it up even more.
Williamson won a scorecard playoff to top the 16-18 girls division in the Starkville Country Club Challenge in the Mississippi Coco-Cola Junior Golf Tour. It’s her first tournament win of the 2026 season.
“The first two holes, I was 2-under,” she said. “And then when I got to the back, it got hot and it got bad, so I kept my mind open and had a good attitude all day.”
Williamson’s 9-over 81 tied her with Maggie McElhaney, but Williamson shot a better back nine than McElhaney, which put her over the top.
“My putting helped me a lot today,” Williamson said. “My driving, too.”
Williamson graduated from Starkville Academy this past school year and will attend Northeast Mississippi Community College in the fall.
Brody Robbins had a slightly easier time winning the 16-18 boys division, posting a 3-under 69 to win by one stroke.
“My driver was really good,” he said. “I kept the ball in play all day and putted well.”
This is Robbins’ fourth win of the season. He won the Coke Tour events at Elm Lake, Back Acres and the Mississippi State University Golf Course.
“I went through a swing change with me and my brother about two months before the Coke Tour,” Robbins said. “And ever since then I've been shooting pretty well.”
Robbins was a top player on the Corinth boys golf team that finished second in the Class 4A championships last season. He led the Warriors and finished sixth among individuals with a two-day score of 16-over 160. Robbins will be a junior next season.
The Coke Tour continues next Monday, July 6 with the River Birch Shootout at River Birch Golf Club in Amory.
Other winners
Landon Ruscoe won the 10-11 boys division with a 1-over 37. Ella Knight topped the 10-12 girls after posting a 3-over 39. Bode Mayhew finished with a 4-over 76, then won a scorecard playoff to top the 12-13 boys group. Jae Marlie Parker was the best among the 13-15 girls following a 13-over 85.
Kullen Nash also won a scorecard playoff to win the 14-15 boys division after shooting a 5-over 77. Sterling Shive won the 5-7 division with a 3 over and Sarah Kang won the 8-9 division with a 1-under 35.
