Barring a dramatic change in the relationship between the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy, quarterback won't be a position that hits the 49ers' list of needs in the 2025 NFL draft. That shouldn't stop them from selecting one.
San Francisco has spent the last two offseason putting together patchwork quarterback rooms. In 2023 it was backup QB Sam Darnold with Brandon Allen working as the third QB. Last season Allen was elevated to backup QB while Joshua Dobbs inked a one-year deal and spent most of the season as the third QB.
This offseason the 49ers let both Dobbs and Allen walk, leaving undrafted second-year QB Tanner Mordecai as the only other signal caller alongside Purdy on the roster. San Francisco wound up adding QB Mac Jones on a one-year deal, which should work this season, but it leads to a 2026 offseason where the 49ers are once again searching for an adequate backup QB.
Drafting a QB in 2025 could help the 49ers skip the backup QB question mark for at least a few years. It would also give a QB time to develop in the 49ers' system where the club would feel good about him potentially starting games if Purdy is unavailable.
This isn't to say the 49ers should reach for a QB early. They have too many immediate needs to use an early pick on what amounts to a luxury pick for the current iteration of their roster. However, when they get later into Day 3 if there's a prospect they feel good about as a project, they shouldn't hesitate to make that move.
Adding a rookie QB this season gives him a full year to sit as the QB3 behind Purdy and Jones. Assuming their rookie campaign goes well, they'll settle into a backup role next year where they'd be on a cost-effective rookie deal for three more years.
It's not a calamity if the 49ers don't draft a QB this year, but it would certainly make a ton of sense if they did.
