NASHVILLE – Four days before this year's Indianapolis 500, Will Power's dad went into cardiac arrest at a public swimming pool in Queensland, Australia. Will's brother, Damien, shared the news about their father, Bob, via Instagram on Sunday.
Bob was airlifted to a hospital and put into a coma. When speaking at the media bullpen ahead of the Music City Grand Prix, Will said he and Damien were discussing who would make the decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment leading into Power's first Indy 500 with Andretti Global.
Bob, however, came out of the coma. Will claims that Bob – a former open-wheel driver himself – is "back to normal" and "going to be perfectly fine." Bob is back to walking and talking.
"I remember actually thinking about him in the race," Will said. "I just had that exact thought going into Turn 2, I know the exact spot. So it was really on my mind there ... until eventually I was able to have a conversation with him on the phone."
Will placed 29th in the Indy 500 that weekend, as his No. 26 Honda suffered a mechanical failure 91 laps into the race. He was in contention for a podium finish in Detroit the following weekend before back-and-forth contact between he and former teammate Scott McLaughlin ruined both drivers' day.
Will said he wants to speak to the man who saved Bob, as he said his dad was brought back to life by a former paramedic and police officer who happened to be at the same pool at the time of the incident.
"If that guy's not there or anyone else is there, (my dad is) dead," he claimed.
In April, Bob fought off an armed carjacker in Australia, which led to the arrest of the carjacker, who police were in search of.
"Only my dad would go, 'Well, I don't want my car stolen,'" Will said on IndyStar's The Inside Line podcast. "If someone walked up with a shotgun to me, I'd be like, 'Yeah, take the car man, I don't need it.'"
Will Power's dad had an eventful spring that saw his life threatened multiple times, but Bob seems to be progressing in the right direction after the Power family was unsure of his health during the biggest week of the IndyCar season.
