Former UConn women's basketball star Paige Bueckers took another encouraging step toward returning to WNBA action Wednesday, participating in shootaround ahead of the Dallas Wings' game against the Portland Fire on Wednesday night.
Dallas fans watched the closing minutes of Sunday's game anxiously after Bueckers was escorted to the locker room following a collision with Los Angeles Sparks star Nneka Ogwumike that caused her to hit the back of her head on the court. Bueckers was in good spirits after the game and was cleared by the Wings' medical staff of a concussion, but she sat out Monday's matchup against the New York Liberty because of rest.
Missing the second game of a back-to-back is a common load-management practice, but concerns about Bueckers resurfaced when she was listed as questionable for Wednesday's game because of soreness. Teammate Alanna Smith was also listed as questionable and did not participate in Wednesday's shootaround.
Bueckers is hoping to return before Saturday's WNBA All-Star Game, where she will serve as one of the two team captains alongside MVP frontrunner A'ja Wilson. Former UConn stars Breanna Stewart and Gabby Williams are on Team Bueckers, while Azzi Fudd is scheduled to compete in Friday's 3-point contest.
The Wings and Fire are scheduled to tip off at 10 p.m. EDT at the Moda Center in Portland. The game will be televised nationally on USA Network and CNBC.
