BEREA — The Browns' actions have indicated the direction they were going with regards to re-signing free-agent running back Nick Chubb. They added some even stronger words to that direction on Friday.
General manager Andrew Berry was on the team's FM flasgship station, 92.3 The Fan, with hosts Ken Carman and Anthony Lima on Friday morning. He was asked about the chances of the Browns reaching a deal with Chubb, the third-leading rushing in the team's history.
“I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I would say it’s probably increasingly unlikely,” Berry told Carman and Lima. “We do have two young guys (draft picks Quinshon Judkins, Dylan Sampson) that we like. We think Jerome (Ford) plays a role. It’s basically kind of maybe seeing how the roles shake out in the running backs room.
"You’re never going to rule out someone as near and dear to our heart as Nick. And I would expect him to take another step, being another year removed from the injury. But I’d say maybe a return is less likely — at least in the short term — with us right now.”
Berry's words were the strongest indicator yet that the fan favorite Chubb isn't in the Browns' immediate plans. He had essentially said as much after they took Judkins and Sampson, when he said "the complexion of our running back room has changed this weekend."
The general manager didn't publicly comment a week ago when Ford re-structured his deal to take a pay cut. However, which fully-guaranteed the final year of his deal, was another signal of the Browns' intentions at the position.
“My job in decision-making is to be non-emotional. And then in terms of managing and treating people, it’s to be able to do it as empathetically as possible,” Berry said on 92.3. “I think one of the hardest things is when you transition away from a player who meant a lot to the organization and meant a lot to the community.
“But the reality of it is, look, I’d love for key players in our organization to stay with us forever, play until they’re 45. Unfortunately, this sport doesn’t allow that. And so that’s part of the tough parts of the job, but it doesn’t change how you view, or treat, or feel about the guys who have come through as people.”
Judkins and Sampson made their Browns' debuts, albeit in T-shirt and shorts, shortly after Berry's comments. They were participating in the first day of the team's rookie minicamp.
Those two are viewed as the heirs apparent at the position, forming their own version of what the Browns had with Chubb and Kareem Hunt. It's a weight they are embracing.
“Nick Chubb is a great running back," Judkins said. "He's done a lot of great things here. I'm excited to come in and do what I can, and me and Dylan both contributing to the team. Start my own legacy. I think the coaches [are going to] put me in a great position to do that.”
The veterans weren't in the Browns' facility on Friday when rookie minicamp started. However, with phase two of the voluntary offseason program underway, they were during the course of the week, including linebacker Devin Bush.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Bush, who was arrested on simple assault and harassment on Sunday in suburban Pittsburgh, was a participant in the offseason workouts this week. However, he declined to speak any further on the subject.
"He was in the building this week," Stefanski said. "I don't have much more to comment on past that, but we'll update you as there's more information."
Bush was arrested Sunday by Bell Acres borough police after they were called to the residence due to an alleged domestic disturbance involving him and his girlfriend. The linebacker was accused of forceably taking the victim's phone away from her and smashing it before leaving the residence.
The next stage in the legal proceding is his preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for May 20 at 1:30 p.m. in Allegheny County Magistral District Court.
