Lionel Messi is inching toward more World Cup history.
The decorated Argentina star added another notch in his illustrious career in his first match of the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday, June 16 when he scored three goals against Algeria. He opened the match making history as the first man ever to play in six World Cup tournaments, and it took him just 17 minutes to become the first man to score in six different editions. He then followed it with a second goal in the 60th minute and got his first World Cup hat trick in the 76th minute, which just happened to tie the men's World Cup scoring record.
Not only is it another set of epic goals, it also moved Messi up the leaderboard for the most goals ever scored in a men's World Cup, and the overall FIFA World Cup scoring record.
Messi has scored 16 goals in the World Cup, tying him for the most in men's history and second in World Cup history, men's and women's.

Messi's next opportunity to become the all-time men's World Cup scoring leader will come when Argentina plays Austria on Monday, June 22 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The all-time leader in all World Cup scoring is Brazil's Marta, who scored 17 goals in her career. Messi will also have a chance in his next match and in the tournament to tie or break Marta's record.
