It's been a while since we checked in on former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard.
Mostly mixed reactions for the 2025 national champion, as the battle for the backup signal-caller continues between him and third-round pick Drew Allar. ESPN evaluated his play throughout the second week of training camp, pinning Allar as the better performer thus far.
"Allar was slightly more impressive than Howard during this week's practices," the article wrote. "He was more decisive in his decision-making, took more chances downfield and was often successful whenever he did stretch the field. He also made some tight throws in traffic that included several impressive completions for scores during red zone drills."
Not great news for Howard, who really wants to shine as the next man up in Pittsburgh. Many fans and analysts lauded him as the franchise's future, even with Aaron Rodgers returning. Some believe the franchise should invest in a long-term option rather than keep signing one-year veterans. Setbacks like these make it difficult to have complete faith in him.
The Steelers drafted Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 Draft, after he won a championship in his fifth collegiate season. Howard spent four years at Kansas State, compiling 5,786 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions, while rushing for 921 yards and 19 touchdowns. He transferred to Ohio State for the chance to compete nationally and make a case for the pros. Howard did just that, leading the Buckeyes to the title on a legendary postseason run.
However, it's hard for many to erase his four years prior, which is why he still wasn't considered a Day 1 - or really even Day 2 - prospect. While six rounds did seem a bit egregious, it's understandable why the Steelers would pick Howard so late. One great season doesn't completely override his largely average Wildcats career. He did win a Big 12 championship and put up some decent numbers, but it wasn't enough to attract NFL scouts.
In addition, some question Howard's true impact on that national championship team. The Buckeyes boasted the country's best defense and several NFL-level offensive weapons. All this led to him dropping in the sixth round, where the Steelers selected him to compete with Rodgers and the rest of the quarterback carousel.
He's in a unique situation in Pittsburgh where he can compete even as a late-Draft selection. The quarterback room doesn't flaunt a true headliner, even with Rodgers as the projected starter. The 42-year-old is far past his MVP days, opening the door for a backup to get real playing time in 2026.
