Will Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters divert from his free agency protocol?

Initially, let's clarify, this is not a criticism of how Peters has approached NFL free agency. There are two sides to this. Some will see Peters as too tight, relying too often on one-year 'prove it' deals. The other side of this equation is that the Commanders are not strapped down with dead cap hits due to the long-term deals Peters has produced in his two seasons as Commanders GM.

Peters' custom, his code, during his first two free-agency offseasons, has been to sign the vast majority of his signees to one-year contracts. There have been a few deals with the Commanders, as long as three years, since Peters was hired in 2024. Let's look back to remind ourselves how Peters organized his NFL free agency signing period in his first two seasons as Commanders GM.

Seven players signed deals longer than one year with Peters and the Commanders in 2024 NFL free agency and only three did the same in the 2025 signing period. That is a total of ten in two years. As you will note below, six were signed to three-year deals and four to two-year deals.
