Trey Hendrickson is done with the Cincinnati Bengals.
That goes both ways. The Bengals didn’t franchise tag him this week. And he quickly issued a farewell message, publicly saying no thanks to the idea he could return in free agency.
So, the conversation shifts to whether the Bengals will get a compensatory pick in the 2027 NFL draft for the loss.
The easiest answer? It’s complicated.
On paper, the Bengals can receive as high as a third-round compensatory pick for Hendrickson.
But the comp pick formula aimed at league-wide parity judges many factors when deciding if they have lost more or better free agents than they sign.
The Bengals have $47 million in free cap space right now and droves of immediate needs to address in free agency, so there’s always a chance they spend big and negate any comp picks in 2027.
And don’t laugh: The Bengals are well-known for overvaluing comp picks. But that’s faded in recent years, and they’ve thrown the process by the wayside during offseasons they’ve signed names like Hendrickson and Orlando Brown Jr.
Still, it will be interesting to see if the Bengals lose other free agents like Joseph Ossai. When it’s all tallied up and revealed this time next year, the Bengals could have an extra pick or two.
But if they’re spending like they should, it might not be a third-round pick for Hendrickson’s departure, if anything at all.
