Future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers is once again a free agent this offseason, and with the NFL free-agency legal tampering period starting March 9, his future as an NFL player isn't yet obvious. Rodgers, 42, hasn't definitively said if he's done playing.
"The belief around the league, and let's preface it by saying it's Aaron Rodgers and there are never any absolutes … the feeling is he's supposed to give an answer by mid-March," ESPN writer Adam Schefter said on his podcast Feb. 25. "Many people felt that there was no chance he'd be back. It certainly sounds like it's an absolute consideration. It sounds like he's more likely than not to be back today."
Schefter said he thinks "the feeling is" that the former Green Bay Packers great winds up back with the Steelers for a second season, but that's not the only team he mentioned.
"If we go back to last year, he wanted to play in Minnesota," Schefter said. "That's the interesting one to me. I don't know how Aaron Rodgers feels, and I don't know how the Vikings feel. They didn't want to do that last year because I think they were being protective of J.J. McCarthy. Do they still feel the same way, or is Aaron Rodgers more in the conversation?"
That question would certainly be of interest to Packers fans, who know well the feeling of a former franchise quarterback joining Minnesota, with a year as a New York Jet in between, no less. Brett Favre played in 2009 and 2010 with the Vikings at age 40 and 41; he beat the Packers both times head-to-head in the first year on his way to the NFC title game but went 0-2 in an injury-shortened 2010 season that finished with the Packers as Super Bowl champion.
Speaking at the NFL scouting combine on Feb. 24, Steelers general manager Omar Khan said the door was open for Rodgers. Khan also acknowledged that neither side wanted it to drag on as long as it did last year; Rodgers signed with the Steelers in early June.
"I spoke to him last week," Khan said. "Mike McCarthy has spoke to him. He knows how we feel about him. Right now, we're proceeding. … He's a free agent, and he's not on the roster, but he knows how we feel about him."
McCarthy, of course, coached Rodgers in Green Bay from 2006-18. The Steelers hired McCarthy as head coach in January, replacing Mike Tomlin, and he has littered his Steelers staff with former Packers connections.

Aaron Rodgers’ decision about whether to return for his 22nd NFL season is expected sooner than last year and there is a belief it could come by mid March.
