The wife of a Los Angeles Dodgers player is speaking out after her husband’s performance sparked online hate directed at their family.
Maddie Scott shared a glimpse of the social media pushback she received after the Dodgers relief pitcher Tanner Scott gave up three earned runs in the eighth inning and the team lost 4-3 on Saturday, May 30.
"I don't speak out often. Ever actually,” Maddie wrote over a screenshot of the vitriol she received on her Instagram Stories. “I promise you, you don't know what it's like unless you're living it."
She added, “When did it stop being a game?"
Maddie called the comments an “unfortunate reality” after one user posted death threats regarding the son he shares with Tanner, 31, as well as their baby on the way.

Online threats hurled toward MLB pitchers have increasingly become an issue.
New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler recently opened up about how he and his family had been the target of trolling and death threats ahead of his start against the Boston Red Sox on April 23.
"Most normal fans could care less, right?" Schlittler told the California Post in an interview published April 19.
He added, "It's just those diehards that just have nothing else in their lives other than baseball or sports that really care about this, and the fact that I play for the Yankees makes it worse for them."
Last season, Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers told reporters he received messages on social media directed at him and his family, some specifically targeting the two young daughters he shares with his wife Kara.
“I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with just as a father, I think,” McCullers told reporters after the Astros’ 13-9 loss against the Cincinnati Reds, according to ESPN.

He added at the time, "So just as a father, I think there have been many, many threats over the years aimed at me, mostly, and I think actually one or two people from other issues around baseball actually had to go to jail for things like that."
"But I think bringing kids into the equation, threatening to find them or next time they see us in public they're going to stab my kids to death, things like that, it's tough to hear as a dad," McCullers said.
