Three-star edge rusher Jag Ioane has turned a 6-sack junior season into heavy recruiting interest in the West.
The junior from Orem (Utah) also had 31 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 2 forced fumbles in 2025, which has led to renewed interest from hometown programs BYU and Utah. Washington has also been in the mix, as has Michigan, where longtime Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is now running the ship.
Washington will get the first visit of those four contenders, as Ioane is set to arrive on Montlake on Friday, June 5, before taking trips to BYU on June 11 and Utah on June 19. That group of visits comes after Washington sent defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi and outside linebackers coach Aaron Van Horn to visit Ioane at his home a few weeks ago.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Ioane is a bit undersized to play on the edge right away, which may be part of why he remains a composite three-star recruit and the No. 88 edge rusher in the 2027 class. But the Orem standout has arms that go nearly to his knees and a frame that can clearly hold more weight, making him one of the more intriguing upside recruits in the class.
Ioane already has high-end get-off at the snap, often shooting past overmatched offensive tackles to make plays essentially unblocked. One such play this past season earned Ioane a tackle for loss that resulted in a safety. He appears to have a high-level understanding of opposing snap counts, often moving forward a second or so before anybody else and carrying forward momentum at the time of the snap.
Once the play is in action, Ioane also has top-end speed for a defender coming off the edge, which erases option threats and frequently puts him in position to make plays as the backside unblocked defender on run plays. His length allows him to get off blocks with a long arm, but tackles that were able to get into his frame were usually able to control the rest of the rep, making it clear that Ioane will need to add strength and mass to hold up on the edge in college.
His snap timing, explosive athleticism, and length are not a combination of traits you see often, however, so it's easy to understand why high-level programs are vying for Ioane's commitment. Washington has plenty of lighter edge rushers on the roster currently, including senior Isaiah Ward (238 pounds) and senior Russell Davis II (231 pounds). Kaufusi can point to the development those two have experienced since signing on with this staff when pitching Ioane, who looks like he could easily get into the 225-230 pound range with a high-level strength and conditioning staff.
Washington does not have a pure edge rusher committed in the 2027 class. Matamatagi Uigalelei could play on the edge but is more likely to end up as a 5-tech defensive tackle. The Huskies also have defensive linemen Jon Ioane and Tevita Nonu, both four-stars, committed in the class as well.
