The 2026 Formula 1 regulations have caused a massive civil war in the paddock. With drivers openly criticizing the heavy cars and complex hybrid systems, the sport is desperately searching for a solution. Now, the absolute top boss of F1 is throwing his full weight behind a legendary comeback.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali just confirmed that he completely supports a return to screaming V8 engines, signaling a massive potential shift in the sport’s future.
The sudden push for V8s is directly tied to the massive backlash against the 2026 machinery. Max Verstappenrecently threatened to quit the sport because managing the 50/50 electrical power split is too complex and mentally exhausting inside the cockpit.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton explicitly begged for the return of older engines after finishing P2 in Montreal. He argued that the current hybrid era simply does not feel like real motorsport.
“The engine should be ringing its neck off right to the end of the straight,” Hamilton argued to the media in Canada. “That’s what they used to do in the V8 times or the V10 times”.
With the biggest stars on the grid openly hating the heavy, battery-dependent 2026 cars, F1 executives are finally listening.
Domenicali spent the early part of the 2026 season defending the current hybrid power units. But speaking recently to French publication L’Equipe, the Italian executive changed his tune dramatically.
“I am 1000 percent in favour of the V8,” Domenicali stated (via GPblog). He explained that shedding the heavy electrical batteries to create lighter cars and simpler engines represents “the pure essence of motor racing”.
This lines up perfectly with recent comments from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who boldly claimed in Miami that the “V8 is coming,” potentially as early as 2030.
It is easy for drivers and executives to demand V8s, but getting the multi-billion-dollar engine manufacturers to actually agree to scrap their hybrid investments is usually impossible. However, the top garage bosses are shockingly aligned.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff surprisingly backed the idea of dropping the complex hybrids. “We love V8s, that has only great memories,” Wolff admitted (via F1i). While he acknowledged that backtracking could look “a bit ridiculous,” he confirmed that Mercedes is fully on board if the plan is executed well. “Count Mercedes in to come back with a real, real racing engine,” Wolff declared.
Even the incoming engine manufacturers are on board. Ford’s Racing Chief, Mark Rushbrook, told The Detroit News that as a company that builds naturally aspirated engines, they would “love to see a V8 here”.
With the FIA President, the F1 CEO, Mercedes, and Ford all singing the same tune, the 2026 hybrid regulations might just be a temporary bridge. The era of pure, screaming V8 engines could legitimately be on the horizon.
