It's not the move most of us expected, but the Boston Celtics have addressed their center position. Brad Stevens flipped Anfernee Simons and a second-round pick to the Chicago Bulls in return for Nikola Vucevic and a second-round pick. Vucevic, like Simons, is on an expiring contract and could leave the franchise during the summer, unless the front office looks to re-sign him to a new deal.
As part of the trade, the Celtics have generated a $27 million trade exception. They did that by absorbing Vucevic's salary into the preexisting $22 million trade exception from the Kristaps Porzingis trade to the Atlanta Hawks. Not only did the move strengthen an area of need, it also provided Stevens with significant flexibility moving forward.
However, the trade wasn't perfect. By moving Simons, Boston is now short on guard depth. In a recent YouTube video from the "Cyro Asseo" channel, the host looked at all the pros and cons from Boston's biggest trade deadline deal. He touched on what Vucevic can bring to the table and how losing Simons could impact Joe Mazzulla's rotation moving forward.
