Liverpool secured the Premier League title amid wild celebrations at Anfield after their result against Tottenham Hotspur, but they did not lift the trophy in front of their supporters.

Here is why.

Why are Liverpool not getting the trophy on Sunday?

It is tradition in the Premier League that the champions get their hands on the trophy on their final home game of the season. The competition is yet to confirm this officially. They will do so after the winners are confirmed and organisers can agree with the club.

Clubs do not lift the trophy in front of their fans if the title race goes to the final day of the season and they are playing away.

When will they get the trophy?

Liverpool are set to get the trophy on the final day of the season, when they have a home fixture against Crystal Palace. It could be a double celebration at Anfield on May 25 as Palace are playing in the FA Cup final the previous weekend.

It will be a very different atmosphere to Liverpool’s triumph in 2020 under Jürgen Klopp when they lifted the trophy in front of a near-empty Anfield.

They had secured the title with seven games to spare on June 25 and got the trophy on their final home game of the campaign in July – but Covid-19 safety rules meant there were no fans in the stadium. Jordan Henderson lifted the trophy in front of players’ families, who were given special permission to attend the presentation.

Liverpool will be expected to parade the trophy to fans around the city after receiving it – with details to be confirmed.

Will they get a guard of honour?

There is nothing in the rules to make opponents give Liverpool a guard of honour in their remaining four games of the season. But it is seen as good etiquette for teams to salute the champions with the pre-match tradition. Arsenal will have the chance to be gracious in their title defeat when they face Arne Slot’s team at Anfield on May 11.

Manchester United got a guard of honour from Arsenal in 2013, which made Robin van Persie uncomfortable after switching clubs to win the title.

“I didn’t like it. Some of them were my friends, I spent eight years there and I was just happy that it was over,” he said.

Chelsea gave a guard of honour to United in 2007 when Sir Alex Ferguson played fringe players such as Kieran Lee and Chris Eagles as the title was already secured.
