“It was always Liverpool.” read the banner on the Kop. So it proved, as Arne Slot’s side marched to the club’s record-equalling 20th title in style.
The Kop will party long, hard and by unloading all the passion of a 35 year wait to savour winning the Premier League after being roared on in a carnival Anfield atmosphere – such joyous scenes denied them in 2020 .
Telegraph Sport looks at how Liverpool’s celebrations unfolded.
Celebrations start a little blue
Liverpool fans packed the streets around Anfield and welcomed the team bus in style. But, amongst the sea of red, a few blue flares were released, possibly after an intervention by an Everton fan who had the foresight to swap around some red and blue labels.
Salah’s mid-game selfie
After conceding first, Liverpool pulled away with relative ease and were able to relax into the historic afternoon. Nothing personified this more than Mo Salah taking a selfie with the Liverpool crowd after scoring, having been provided a phone by a member of the Liverpool media time.

Pandemonium erupts
Liverpool’s players and fans go wild on the final whistle, jumping up and down in unison as music blares out around Anfield. Harvey Elliott claimed a corner flag, Cody Gakpo tied a scarf around his head and others dropped to their knees on the pitch.

Stirring rendition of ‘You’ll never walk alone’
After a few minutes of unstructured, wild celebrations, the team lined up together to belt out the club anthem alongside the fans in a rendition that will go down in history. Alisson also made a renowned Everton fan among Liverpool’s physio team – there is one - join in, too.
Klopp tribute from Slot
Amongst the jubilation, Arne Slot was eager to credit his predecessor for the role he played in building the foundations for the title win. “I want to send my appreciation to Jurgen,” Slot proclaimed. Slot then went on to lead a rendition of ‘Jurgen Klopp’ in the spot where the former manager did for him a year ago. An imitation of Klopp’s signature fist bumping then followed.
Champions shirts distributed and players soak it in
The Liverpool shirts with ‘Champions 25’ on the back were handed out to the squad and staff, with Slot among those to put one on. A group of players sat down in the centre circle, soaking up the remarkable scenes around them.
Trent talks to the owner
John W. Henry is spotted deep in conversation with Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season. The special celebrations around him might just be a timely reminder of what Liverpool has to offer.

More selfies
The aforementioned phone that Salah took a selfie with was passed around the squad before returning to the Egyptian. The Liverpool squad huddle together in front of the Kop and Salah takes another selfie for the ages.
Players get their moment one-by-one
Each Liverpool player gets a chance to be adored by the crowd as an individual, walking out from the line of players towards the crowd. From stars of the show to the likes of Joe Gomez, they all took their turns.

Cardboard trophy paraded
Liverpool will not be given the Premier League trophy until the final match of the season, so the players make do with a cardboard cutout instead...

As the Liverpool squad heads back into the changing rooms for some moments of, slightly, more private celebrating, the fans flood out back to the streets as the revelry continues. Fittingly, ‘You’re not nineteen forever’ plays out with Liverpool’s 20th league title secured.

Van Dijk: Consistency key to title victory
Virgil van Dijk has held a press conference in the media room and says he is already dreaming of the moment he will lift the Premier League trophy as skipper.
“It will be amazing. Very emotional. The whole week was slow. It felt ages before matchday. Then it is matchday and you see so many fans in red getting ready from early on. I am very happy that we did it in front of them,” said Van Dijk.
Asked what was the key to Liverpool’s victory, he said: “Consistency. Winning game after game is the key. It is a team process and everyone has played a part. Guys came on and had an impact.
“In my opinion it is the hardest league in the world. It was a glorious day in terms of the atmosphere and the weather. It is incredible to be part of, to get two titles in five years.
“To replace Jurgen is a big job and the manager did it in his own way and deserves a lot of credit. I don’t think anyone from the outside world thought we would be Premier League champions.”

He has been hunting that all afternoon, and Salah brings to an end to his mini-goal drought.
It is a trademark Salah goal, chopping inside from the right corner of the box but rather than curling a shot in the far corner he fires back through legs into the near post.

No ‘one pass too many’ about that one as the talisman gets his reward. Mission complete where Salah is concerned. It was inevitable he would be on the scoresheet, and celebrating by taking a selfie will surely start a new trend.

Spurs have been more subdued since half time, there have been less of those breaks forward. Salah and Szoboszlai combine well down the right, before Gravenberch’s shot from distance is saved by Vicario. Liverpool utterly dominant and it is shoot on sight.
It feels like everyone in a Liverpool shirt is on a mission to get Salah a goal. Liverpool have been guilty of playing one pass too many in front of goal to oblige their talisman.

Salah is looking for his goal. Finds himself in oceans of space down the right and drives into the penalty area with the ball at his feet, but his shot deflects behind off Udogie.
From the corner. there are two loud Liverpool appeals for a penalty but the Spurs players had their arms tucked close to their bodies. No chance of VAR getting involved there.

Liverpool pour forward yet again and a deflected Mac Allister shot goes behind for a corner. Spurs survive. It will not stop the Liverpool party after the match, but some of the air has gone out of the stadium now. Almost like everyone is waiting for the final whistle and final confirmation of the title.

Danso does enough to clear a low cross but Liverpool have a corner. Taken short to Szoboszlai whose cross then flicks off the head of Danso for another corner. Konate threw himself at it but could not make clean contact.

Over elaborate from Gakpo, who should have tucked the ball away after he was picked out by a delicious reverse pass from Mac Allister. The Liverpool forward tried to set up a team-mate for a tap-in, but got it all wrong. That would have been a great team goal.

“Vicario’s passing beggars belief,” is Gary Neville’s verdict on commentary as the Tottenham goalkeeper loses the ball with another scratchy pass to the edge of his own defensive third. Spurs get away with it.

But we take nothing for granted.” FSG must be allowing themselves to believe it is all but done now. Spurs have to come play the ultimate game of Ange-ball and Liverpool can help themselves to more goals to wrap it up in style if they maintain the intensity since they conceded the first goal. Mac Allister, especially, decided to declare this match his. The party is now in full swing.

Spurs show some attacking menace again: Johnson with a spin in behind Robinson, his low cross narrowly evaded the outstretched leg of Solanke at the near post and it required last-ditch defending from Konate to deny Tel a tap-in.

The more cautious Liverpool supporters kept their counsel when it was suggested they could have no better opponents today than Spurs. It has taken 34 minutes of seeing Spurs defend to calm any nerves. They have disintegrated with Liverpool’s increased tempo. The bottles of champagne are currently being removed from the ice buckets.

It took an age for the corner to be taken because Mac Allister could not get the ball to stay still on the quadrant in the breeze. When the ball was delivered, Bergvall’s header at the near post was weak, Johnson made a mess of things before Gakpo did ever so well to control, shift and find the avenue for a shot into the far corner. Game over and Liverpool around going to be crowned in style.

Liverpool expose Tottenham’s obvious weaknesses
With their high line defence and willingness to play five-a-side passes in their own congested penalty area, it’s not difficult to see why Spurs are where they are, is it? There could be eight goals in this game, but perhaps 4-4 in the earlier post was a little optimistic on the visitors behalf given the state of their defending in the last ten minutes.

Spurs have gone up the other end now and won a free-kick in a crossing position wide left. Maddison delivered, and from an improbable angle and distance Solanke flicked a header on which Alisson tipped over the bar. Another Spurs corner. Liverpool defend this one better, with Konate heading clear.

Tel and Gray caught out for Spurs, trying to pass out of pressure in their own penalty area. Gravenberch gets to the loose ball and eases out Gray, allowing for Mac Allister to blast a shot into the top corner with his left foot from 25 yards. No saving those, it was never anywhere else but the top corner.

GOOOOOAALL! Diaz’s equaliser stands
Tottenham’s lead lasted around four minutes and if there was any anxiety inside Anfield that should allay it. Szoboszlai timed his run perfectly, it was a delightful through ball from Salah to release him and Diaz was on hand to score from close range. Surely not the end of the scoring.
The crowd seemed to know that was going to be given before the referee and players. Best buckle up here. Could end up 4-4 it is so open.

Spurs are doing their usual Spurs thing under Postecoglou where they are dangerous with the ball, but susceptible without it. You always feel a goal is a matter of moments away at either end. Solanke opted not to celebrate against his old club, but he’s managed to remove the idea that the visitors have come here to make up the numbers.

Spurs strike from a corner. An outswinger from the right, and Dominic Solanke shrugged off Diaz towards the back post to plant a powerful header beyond Alisson. Arsenal are so far adrift in the title race that the away end is comfortable celebrating the goal.

Gakpo threatens not once but twice. In the first instance, he was picked out by a raking Van Dijk diagonal, and Vicario could only carry his poked attempt behind for a corner. From the set-piece, Liverpool kept the ball alive and Gakpo juggled the ball before sending an overhead kick wide of the post. Got a gasp from the crowd but it missed by a fair distance.

Tottenham keeping the ball quite well, but when they lose it they have so many numbers pushed forward as is customary with them. Davies and Danso isolated against Salah and Diaz, but after the ball was chipped forward for the Egyptian to chase he could not shape a cross around Davies for his team-mate.

Can Ange summon any resistance from Spurs?
If anyone needed a reminder, a point is all that is needed against Tottenham Hotspur today at Anfield, but an absolutely chomping-at-the-bit Kop surely expects the full three points. Spurs, after all, have racked up 18 league defeats this season and there has been little recent evidence to suggest that will not become 19 today, especially with the first leg of a Europa League semi-final on the horizon – against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.
The stats do not bode well for the London side either. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 15 home games against Tottenham in all competitions, and have triumphed in the last three of those. Indeed, Tottenham have won just two of the last 24 Premier League outings against Liverpool. And goals are to be expected today, Spurs’ last Premier League clean sheet was 19 matches ago.
With all that in mind, it will be interesting to see what team Ange Postecoglou goes with and what sort of resistance he can summon from his troops.
Son Heung-min is unavailable again for Spurs through injury. Liverpool, meanwhile, could welcome back Joe Gomez from the hamstring problem he sustained against Plymouth in the FA Cup on February 9. Trent Alexander-Arnold returned off the bench against Leicester, so could the apparently Real Madrid-bound man could start today. We’ll have the teams with you shortly...

Liverpool’s last title party in front of fans was 1989-90 but the last time they actually clinched it on Merseyside was the 1987-88 season, when Dalglish’s classic side completed their title march thanks to a Peter Beardsley winner against Terry Venables’ Tottenham. Chris Bascomberecalls that day with veterans of the Liverpool team Beardsley and Mark Lawrenson, as well as some insight from Phil Thompson.
In Chris’s piece, Beardsley, interestingly, describes Barnes as the best wide player Liverpool have ever had. If we can still consider Mo Salah a wide player, was Barnes better than Salah? Slot: Winning at Anfield ‘a big responsibility’
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says his side have a big responsibility to fans to win the Premier League at Anfield.
Five years ago Jurgen Klopp’s team lifted the trophy in an empty stadium due to Covid restrictions, having won a first title in 30 years by 18 points.
Although there were celebrations outside the ground – both on the night they were confirmed as champions after Manchester City lost at Chelsea when Liverpool were not even playing, and the final game of the season – there was no victory parade for fans to show their appreciation.
With just one point needed from their remaining five matches, Anfield is gearing up for a party at home to Tottenham, who have their eye on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg to save a dreadful season, and the expectation is that confirmation will come today.
But Slot knows he and his players cannot be consumed by the occasion.
“It’s a big responsibility because we are aware of the fact that the last time this club won the league it was Covid time, so everybody is looking forward to today,” he said.
“But we know that there’s still a job to be done, and that’s at least one point. That’s what we know, that’s something we are definitely aware of here inside this building.
“Hopefully our fans support us in the best possible way they can, which they’ve done the whole season, and are aware of the fact that we still need a point.”
Slot will join Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte and Manuel Pellegrini as the fifth manager to win the Premier League in his debut season.
He would become the first Dutchman and the third Liverpool manager to win the league in his first full season in charge, emulating Joe Fagan in 1983-84 and Kenny Dalglish in 1985-86.
