OKLAHOMA CITY — Jackie Lis didn't really consider the significance of stepping to the plate at Devon Park for the first time on Thursday.

In a career that now includes being an NFCA All-American, the Texas Tech softball team's first baseman has done plenty in her time on the softball field. Taking an at-bat during the Women's College World Series had not been one of them. After Mia Williams again got hit by the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning, Lis got her chance.

Before Lis approached the batter's box, head coach Gerry Glasco told her Mississippi State pitcher Alyssa Faircloth would have to go at her, not wanting to plunk a second batter.

"He was really just trying to fire me up and tell me, like, she's going to leave one for you," Lis said. "Just make sure you don't miss it."

Lis didn't miss, sending a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Red Raiders an early advantage. Lis went 2-for-3 with three RBI in her first career WCWS series game, leading Texas Tech to an 8-0 win over the Bulldogs.

"I was just making sure to see the ball up," Lis said of her home run, "because changeups are going to drop, so just making sure that if she throws something hard at me, I get a flat barrel on it, and if she throws me a changeup, just make sure to stay back and drive it."

The home run in the biggest game of her career is just the latest achievement in a long list for the Southern Illinois transfer. After following in her aunt Becky's footsteps at SIU, joining her in the record books in several categories, Lis has done the same at Texas Tech. The home run was her 21st of the season, extending her career-high year, and moved her into sole possession of second place on Tech's single-season HR list behind Williams, who has hit 24 this season.

Williams and Lis also rank first and second, respectively, in single-season RBI. The pair have put on quite an offensive show this season, but Lis has a furry friend to thank for her success.

As is tradition at the WCWS, Devon Park workers got Lis' home run ball and gave it to her family, including Peanut, the golden retriever puppy Lis got in a proposition with her parents.

"She was a deal I made with my family that if I got to 10 home runs, thought I would get a dog a little bit earlier than I thought," Lis said, "and I was at three at the time. The goal was 10, and ever since we made that deal, I've just been on a tear. So I like to credit a lot of it to Peanut."
