With just under one month remaining in the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich still have sufficient time to complete more business. There have been plenty of transfer rumours ahead of the Bundesliga 2026/27 season, including talk about Luis Díaz’s future at Bayern.
The former Liverpool forward has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL), with Al-Hilal reportedly willing to break the bank to sign him. Bayern have shown no interest in selling Diaz, and he is happy to stay in Germany. However, selling the 29-year-old this summer makes perfect sense.
Dreesen insists Díaz will not be sold
Bayern chief executive officer Jan-Christian Dreesen recently insisted that the club will not sell Díaz or Michael Olise this summer.
Dreesen said that rumours about their futures were ‘astonishing’ and had no foundation. Olise was linked with Real Madrid, but they switched their attention to Yan Diomande.
Díaz is Al-Hilal’s primary summer transfer target, but Dreesen says the club will not consider sanctioning a sale this summer.
He said: “We’d be stupid, wouldn’t we? We have such a wonderful team, to be honest. We can’t wait to get the season started and for them to score some goals.”
Olise’s untouchable status is understandable given that he has bagged 42 goals and 54 assists in 107 appearances since joining the club from Crystal Palace in 2024. Díaz also posted impressive numbers last season, weighing in with 26 goals and 23 assists in 51 matches following his move from Liverpool last summer.
Despite those statistics, Bayern would be foolish not to consider the bigger picture where the Colombian international forward is concerned. Al-Hilal are reportedly willing to offer Bayern up to €130 million to sign Díaz this summer. The German giants should snap their hands off.
Díaz enjoyed a productive first season with Bayern, helping them win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. He was excellent alongside Olise and Harry Kane.
However, while domestic success should never be sniffed at, Díaz was unable to help Bayern secure the Champions League title.
Severn goals and four assists in 12 games was a decent enough return, but was not enough to help Bayern end their six-year wait to be crowned European champions again.
Given that Díaz will celebrate his 30th birthday this season, it is not unreasonable to think that his productivity at the top level will start to wane. By contrast, Olise should improve.
Even if Díaz enjoys another strong campaign with Bayern, Al-Hilal are unlikely to return with a €130 million offer for him at the end of this season.
Bayern have already spent €100m this season and are likely to spend more to ensure they have a squad capable of challenging for the Champions League. These last few weeks of the summer transfer window are Bayern’s last opportunity to bank a truly eye-watering fee for the forward, find an affordable replacement and possibly strengthen elsewhere (or have money in the bank for next season when replacing Kane becomes necessary).
Bayern needs to think creatively this summer
The chance to make a massive profit on their initial investment in Díaz is an opportunity that Bayern’s hierarchy cannot afford to pass up. The club has Arijon Arijon Ibrahimović waiting in the wings and he could be ready to make his mark following a successful loan spell with Heidenheim.
Immediately replacing Díaz would be too much to ask, but sharing game time alongside another experienced player could accelerate his development. Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford leaps off the page as a cost-effective option to replace Díaz if Bayern decide to cash in this summer.
Bayern reportedly held talks with his representatives earlier this summer after Barcelona rejected the opportunity to make his loan move permanent. Rashford would likely cost a similar fee to the figure Bayern paid for Díaz and it is not unreasonable to think he could have a similar impact.
Díaz bagged 29 goals and 18 assists in 103 Premier League appearances for Liverpool. Rashford tallied 89 goals and 53 assists in 297 outings for United.
The 28-year-old would relish the opportunity to play alongside Kane and could help Bayern maintain the attacking output they produced last season. More importantly, he would buy Bayern more time to develop Ibrahimovic and breathing space to identify a longer-term replacement for Díaz.
A strong argument can be made for suggesting that Rashford is a better player than Díaz, which makes a potential move for him a no-brainer.
Bayern are renowned for being shrewd operators in the transfer market, so ignoring the potential windfall from Al-Hilal makes no economic sense. Having Rashford in the starting XI rather than Díaz would not negatively impact the quality of Bayern’s attack and give them extra funds to play with in the transfer market.
