The Chargers have not yet officially announced the hiring of Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator, despite reports from reliable sources earlier this week. This has left fans puzzled about what's going on.
The delay is caused by McDaniel still pursuing available head-coaching vacancies. He has pursued opportunities with teams like the Bills, Browns, and Raiders. He withdrew from a scheduled in-person interview with Buffalo on Friday and pulled out of contention for Cleveland's vacancy earlier this past week. However, McDaniel remains linked to the job in Las Vegas.
Therefore, the Bolts are essentially in a holding pattern, waiting to see if McDaniel lands the Raiders' head-coaching position. There is an understanding with head coach Jim Harbaugh that McDaniel will serve as the Chargers' offensive coordinator unless he becomes a head coach.
While McDaniel is in the mix, Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Broncos quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Davis Webb appear to be the front runners for the position.
Should McDaniel land a head-coaching job, they likely already have a backup plan with one of the other coaches that they have interviewed.
The Chargers have also been searching for a new defensive coordinator after Jesse Minter left to become the Ravens' head coach.
