The Washington Huskies added a huge piece to their 2027 class on Thursday afternoon in four-star defensive tackle Jon Ioane, which was a four-year victory for Jedd Fisch's coaching staff after being the first program to extend an offer to him in eighth grade.
In an effort led by defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi, the No. 183 overall prospect and No. 9 athlete in the 2027 class, according to 247Sports' rankings, developed a strong bond with many different people inside the program, which ultimately won the battle for the Huskies.
"I'm a big relationship guy, and that's a staff that I've known since their days at Arizona," Ioane told 247Sports' Blair Angulo after his announcement. "I feel like that connection that we built over time was something that I kept to my heart, and really, just being able to believe another man's word, I feel like that's a big thing in life that goes unnoticed, is being able to trust someone. And with that staff over there, I know I can trust them, so I'm willing to put all my chips in."
As the Huskies continue to prioritize high-end defensive linemen to overhaul the unit to compete with the Big Ten's elite programs, Ioane's size and versatility are a perfect fit for what defensive coordinator Ryan Walters wants to do up front.
"It's really exciting," Ioane added. "One of my biggest things is versatility, so I think I'll be able to get that out there at Washington."
Angulo also asked Ioane to give a self-scouting report of what he'll bring to Montlake.
"I'm a big mental guy," he concluded. "You've gotta know the game before you can play the game, and physically, I feel like I'm up there with anyone. It's really just the understanding of the game where I feel like I'm unmatched, and I'm ready to go at Washington and step in and make an impact."
