Here's something you might be wondering about with the Democratic Republic of Congo appearing in the World Cup after 52 years and make it to the Round of 32: Shouldn't the the African nation be listed as DRC and not as COD? That confused a bunch of fans watching them at the 2026 World Cup.
That's the way they're listed because of what's known as their ISO alpha-3 code that are used internationally. The Republic of the Congo -- a different country -- is COG. But Democratic Republic of the Congo is also known by its French name, Congo-Kinshasa, so COD is closer to that name and differentiates it enough from Republic of the Congo.
