Who is the DR Congo statue guy?

The DR Congo "Statue Guy" is Lumumba Vea, a long-time supporter of the national team who has become one of the most recognisable figures in international soccer.

Vea rose to global prominence during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, when his distinctive appearance and unwavering support for the Leopards regularly caught the attention of television cameras and fans on social media. His popularity has continued to grow during DR Congo's first World Cup appearance since 1974.

Having followed the national team for more than a decade, Vea has become synonymous with Congolese football and is widely regarded as one of the sport's most dedicated supporters.

Lumumba Vea real name

Lumumba Vea's real name is Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, although he is also sometimes referred to as Michel Kuka Mboladinga.

His nickname, "Lumumba Vea" — meaning "Lumumba Lives" — is a tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo's first prime minister after independence.

Why does Lumumba Vea always stand during matches?

Lumumba Vea stands throughout DR Congo matches to honour Patrice Lumumba, the country's first prime minister after it became an independent nation in 1960.

His trademark stance is inspired by a statue of Lumumba in the capital, Kinshasa, and serves as a personal tribute to a figure widely regarded as a national hero.

What began as a gesture of respect has become synonymous with Vea's support for the national team.

Does Lumumba Vea attend every DR Congo game?

No, Lumumba Vea does not attend every DR Congo match, although he has followed the Leopards across the world for more than a decade.

His most notable absence came during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Ebola-related travel restrictions prevented him from attending DR Congo's opening match against Portugal. Vea was initially unable to travel to the United States after visiting an affected region, delaying the approval of his visa application.

However, the supporter later secured his visa and completed the necessary protocols, allowing him to join DR Congo supporters in time for the team's second group-stage match against Colombia on June 23, which will be held in Zapopan, Mexico.
