Stunning news dropped on Monday morning as the North Carolina Tarheels are getting ready for training camp later this month: General manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on "paid administrative leave, effective immediately," per a statement.
But why would North Carolina do that? The statement from Vice Chancellor Dean Stoyer made it clear we wouldn't hear about the reason anytime soon: "As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits."
So we don't know yet why this happened, but we'll be sure to update this post with more info as it comes.
He was UNC's general manager since 2025. Before that, he worked for the NFL Network and NFL.com and has a podcast, The GM Shuffle. He worked for Bill Belichick when the legendary coach was with the New England Patriots, which led to him being hired by North Carolina after Belichick joined the program as head coach.
He was also the general manager for the Cleveland Browns in 2013.
No official word on that just yet.
