Money can't buy everything. It can buy an elite NCAA softball team, however.

The Red Raiders' three best players came via the transfer portal in NiJaree Canady, Mia Williams and Kaitlyn Terry. Gargantuan NIL spending is what's made this possible.

Canady signed a historic $1 million deal with Texas Tech upon leaving Stanford in 2024. The two-way star is the sport's highest-paid player, and has the Red Raiders back in the Championship Series of the Women's College World Series.

Now, here's what we knot about the journeys for Williams and Terry.

Why did Mia Williams leave Florida?

Williams, the daughter of NBA legend Jason Williams, says she transferred from Florida after the 2025 WCWS for two primary reasons: her friendship with Texas Tech third baseman Taylor Pannell and unhappiness with the Gators program. The second baseman has not spoken publicly about how NIL played into her decision.

Why did Kaitlyn Terry transfer from UCLA?

Terry, a two-way star like Canady, hasn't been as open about her decision. It's fair to assume Texas Tech's significant NIL opportunities had at least some role, though.
