Why did ESPN let go of former NFL quarterback Cam Newton after less than two years at the network?

Newton, a regular First Take contributor, joined ESPN in fall 2024 but found himself on the outside looking in on Tuesday's company layoffs, per Awful Announcing.

Fellow NFL vets Ryan Clark and Bart Scott, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, baseball play-by-play man Karl Ravech and injury analyst Stephania Bell were among the broadcast talents cut from ESPN.

Why was Newton among the layoffs? These moves are usually done for cost-cutting and organizational restructuring, but it's also possible ESPN may shrink its pool of program-specific personalities.

Newton does still have his YouTube channel 4th&1 With Cam Newton, so he will still be out there broadcasting. It just won't be on ESPN.

What is ESPN saying about the layoffs?
